YouTube Expands Shorts Video Length To 3 Minutes
Beginning OCTOBER 15th, YOUTUBE is extending the maximum length of its SHORTS videos to three minutes. This change was made in response to creator requests. It applies to all new videos with a square or taller aspect ratio. Videos uploaded before this date will not be affected.
This update follows a similar move by TIKTOK, which increased its video length to three minutes in 2023. YOUTUBE’s updates are part of its effort to compete with TIKTOK, especially as TIKTOK’s future in the U.S. is uncertain due to possible regulations.
In addition to the length increase, YOUTUBE is adding new features to enhance SHORTS. It will include the ability to remix clips from existing YOUTUBE videos, music videos, and more directly from the SHORTS camera. Later this year, YOUTUBE will introduce a new AI tool to help creators produce richer video content.
A new SHORTS trending page will also be available for mobile users, making it easier to discover trending content in their region. YOUTUBE is also updating comments to show previews in the SHORTS feed, giving users a quick view of discussions before they visit the comment section.
For users who prefer fewer SHORTS in their feed, YOUTUBE is adding a “Show Fewer Shorts” option in settings, temporarily reducing the number of SHORTS appearing in the HOME feed, making it easier to focus on other types of content.
