NY State Senator Cites Wendy Williams In Guardianship Reform Push
NEW YORK State Senator ANTHONY PALUMBO has renewed his efforts for guardianship reform with the introduction of KARILYN’S LAW. The legislation comes on the heels of the well-publicized WENDY WILLIAMS guardianship case.
KARILYN’S LAW goal is to protect individuals under guardianship by making sure family and friends can maintain visitation rights. The bill is named after KARILYN MONTANTI, a senior citizen whose family was denied visitation while she was under guardianship. If passed, the law would prohibit guardians from isolating individuals without due process and require courts to hold evidentiary hearings within 10 days of a request for visitation rights.
WILLIAMS has been vocal about her own experiences under conservatorship. She and her niece, ALEX FINNIE, appeared recently on THE BREAKFAST CLUB to talk about their experiences.
FINNIE talked about how hard it’s been for family members to keep in contact with WILLIAMS. She’s currently under the care of a guardian, SABRINA MORRISSEY, and lives in a high-security facility. WILLIAMS reportedly does not have access to a personal phone, with outgoing calls being her only form of communication.
FINNIE said, “My aunt sounds great. I’ve seen her in a very limited capacity, but I’ve seen her. We’re talking to her. This does not match an incapacitated person.”
PALUMBO commented, “NEW YORK’s guardianship system needs to be overhauled to protect some of the State’s most vulnerable residents from forced isolation and provide them with the ability to see loved ones and friends. The denial of visitation rights is just one component of the guardianship abuse we are witnessing throughout NEW YORK, but it is the most inhumane and must be addressed in 2025.”
