NPR College Podcast Challenge Returns, $5,000 Prize
NPR has announced the return of its College Podcast Challenge for the fourth year, offering a $5,000 cash prize to the winner. The competition provides students with the opportunity to share their stories and potentially reach NPR’s national audience.
The contest is open to students pursuing an associate or bachelor’s degree, as well as those who graduated earlier in 2024. The submission window is now through JANUARY 10th, 2025. Participants are encouraged to use this time to create their entries, whether they are seasoned journalists or newcomers to podcasting.
Last year’s grand prize winner, MIAMI DADE student MICHAEL VARGAS ARANGO, shared his experience with schizoaffective disorder to challenge misconceptions about mental illness. He said, “I wanted to tell a story that’s been with me since I was diagnosed as a teenager.”
Submissions can cover any topic and be in various formats, including interviews, narratives, or investigative reporting. To assist students, NPR provides resources like a student podcasting guide and “The Students’ Podcast” for tips on creating impactful content.
In response to feedback, NPR has extended the maximum length of entries to 12 minutes, up from the previous eight-minute limit. The challenge will award a $5,000 scholarship to the winner and $500 each to the other finalists.
NPR’s Senior Representative added, “We’re excited to hear the diverse stories and voices that students bring to the table. It’s an opportunity for students across all disciplines to make their voices heard.”
