They Actually Agree On Something

Representatives STEVE WOMACK (R-AR-3) and KATHY CASTOR (D-FL-14) have reintroduced the LOCAL RADIO FREEDOM ACT (LRFA), a resolution aimed at protecting local radio stations from new performance fees. The measure has gained support from over 100 initial co-sponsors.

The resolution comes as a direct response to ongoing efforts to impose new performance fees on U.S. radio stations. Recently, Senator MARSHA BLACKBURN (R-TN) reintroduced the AMERICAN MUSIC FAIRNESS ACT (AMFA), a bill that would require AM/FM stations to pay performance royalties for on-air music use. The LOCAL RADIO FREEDOM ACT serves as a countermeasure, reinforcing that local radio should not be subjected to additional financial burdens.

Congressman WOMACK stated, “The LOCAL RADIO FREEDOM ACT opposes charges that could threaten the viability of these local businesses that many people rely on.” He emphasized the critical role of local radio in providing entertainment, news, and emergency information.

Congresswomen CASTOR added, “The radio is a top, trusted choice for receiving local news, weather alerts, traffic updates, community opportunities, and so much more.” She highlighted radio’s importance in delivering crucial updates during severe weather conditions in FLORIDA.

NAB Pres./CEO CURTIS LEGEYT said, “Imposing a new performance fee on top of the hundreds of millions that local stations already pay in copyright and streaming fees would severely hinder our ability to provide these free and essential services to our listeners.”
