Trouble At Sunrise, Chokehold Anybody? …
When people work closely together, disagreements are bound to happen. Most of the time, it’s nothing serious, and sometimes it’s even healthy. Over the years, I’ve seen my share of behind-the-scenes drama at radio stations. But one moment still makes me laugh every time I think about it.
Sounded Fine On-Air…
During my programming days I came to work one early morning to a bit of a situation. I walked by the on-air studio on the way to my office and my morning show twosome were loudly having a difference of opinion off air. I looked into the studio window and one member of the duo had their forearm against the neck of his partner up against the wall.
No Harm No Foul…
I didn’t see any blood, therefore, I didn’t automatically rush into the studio. After I settled into my office, I thought I’d head back to the studio, but the red light was on which of course meant they were about to go on the air. So, I stepped back into my office. I listened to them do a great talk-set going into a commercial break. I thought to myself, they sound great, no reason to interfere just yet.
Before The Staff Started Rolling In…
I listened to a few more breaks and waited until the traffic report came on. I quickly stepped into the studio to have a short chat with them. It was about 6:35am and we were still the only ones in the building.
I told them I noticed they were having issues and that I didn’t want to hear about it until after they got off the air. I added, “In the future, whatever problems you’re having, I want it settled before everyone starts getting to work.” Then I complimented them on how great the show sounded. In fact, I thought to myself, maybe they should fight in the studio every morning off-mic.
No Biggie…
Sometimes, you’ve got to let your morning team work things out on their own. If there’s no gunfire, stabbing, fisticuffs, or office gossip floating around, it’s probably just a family-style disagreement. But if that tension ever spills out onto the air, well, that’s a different column for another time.
