With all the new ways of communicating, too many of us miss the boat when it comes to understanding what exactly is being communicated. There’re fewer people dealing with more responsibilities than they can handle. The new technologies make clarity more important than ever. Back and forth texts, emails, and instant messages are a pain because too often you have to write more to further explain what it is you’re trying to say.

The Sound Of A Voice…

A brief phone call can save a lot of time and miscommunications. However, it’s important to be disciplined enough to stay on point and not stray when you call someone to go over something. Notice that I said a phone call, not a Zoom call. Texts, emails, and instant messaging are great tools for exchanging information, but not for human connection.

Way Too Much Information…

“Real Time” in terrestrial radio/audio media means that “the present becomes the past” right in front of our eyes. And it does so faster than at any time in human history. We get a flood of information from numerous sources. New technology and delivery systems have turned what used to be “In Due Time” into “Right Now.” Control the time instead of letting it control you.

Hard To Keep Up…

Don’t get so caught up gathering information that you forget to build an idea. Hours can pass by in front of a computer screen or smart phone looking at content. Collecting information doesn’t do any good if you don’t stop and build it into creative thought. Once you’ve figured out what to share, a phone call is the best way to get your message across.

Talk It Out, Don’t Type It Out…

Networking will keep our industry growing as it evolves. But we must control time and use technology to our advantage. Solving issues or holding discussions over email, texting, or instant messenger is hard to do. Those methods lack vocal and nonverbal cues that add depth to communication. A phone call can provide instant clarity, prevent misunderstandings, and lead to a new perspective.

A Call Made The Difference…

This isn’t just a theory. I recently had a phone conversation with a friend in the voice acting business that proved just how important a call can be. She gave me a better understanding of the mobile gear available for working remotely. If we had relied on back-and-forth emails, it would have taken much longer to piece together that information. That’s the kind of connection that only an actual conversation can provide. Just to be clear.
