Sick & Tired Of Being Sick & Tired …
It’s difficult to make good decisions when your brain is not operating on all cylinders. You’re no good to anybody, including you, if you make yourself sick. That’s why vacations are important.
To Go Or Not To Go…
The first vacation I ever took in radio felt strange. I had all these “what ifs” going through my head: “What if my boss decided the guy filling in for me was better? What if management decided to eliminate my time slot?” What if this or what if that, etc. It was hard for me to believe that I got paid for something I never thought of as work.
A Man Possessed…
Things didn’t get any easier for me when I became a Program Director. I was doing way too much and wearing myself out in my first job as the head honcho. After about a year, the General Manager wanted to know if I was ever going to take a vacation. I can still hear him saying, “Are you trying to work yourself into an early grave? Get out of here, leave, you’ve got a second in command. You need to go somewhere and relax for a few days.”
Sort Of Kinda…
Even though I didn’t want to, I left for a weeks’ vacation. But how could I relax when there was so much going on. Or at least that was my perception. The whole time I was gone, I was constantly calling the hotline, the Promotions Director, the General Manager, and the Music Director. By the time I got back, everybody needed a vacation away from me.
Hey Workaholic…
You should know when to slow down, but a lot of us don’t. Taking vacations are important. The work will still be there when you get back. Treat yourself and get the hell out of there for a week or 10 days. Three-day weekends are cool, but they don’t give you the kind of relaxation that you really need.
Plan Ahead…
I know it’s easier said than done but try to put the job out of your mind. If you’re a programmer, delegate duties while you’re away. My advice for air talent, make sure you’ve completed all your assigned production before you leave.
Try To Relax…
Whether it’s a simple stay-cation or a trip out of town, the change of scenery will do you good. Whatever you decide to do, don’t listen to any radio while you are gone. The time will pass quickly, and when you get back, you’ll be relaxed, focused, energized, and more productive.
My Grandfathers Advice…
He used to tell my grandmother whenever she was on one of her cleaning binges, ““Lil, the dust will still be around when we’re dead. We’ll just be a part of it.” Enough said, take your vacations!
