Build Your Lifeboat, No Sharks Allowed …
Who Can You Trust?…
One of my annual traditions is the “Lifeboat” exercise. It helps me revamp my list of people I can trust personally and professionally.
It’s Tough, But…
The hardest part is being honest with myself about family, friends, clients, and business associates. This exercise keeps my circle of trust in line with my goals. I re-examine my reasons for retaining, excluding, or adding new people into my inner circle.
Who’s Got Your Back?…
At some point in life, you may find yourself needing to know who you could count on in any situation. There are variations on this exercise, but it boils down to one essential question: “Who do you want in your Lifeboat?”
Whatever Suits You…
To do this exercise you can choose the number of people allowed in your Lifeboat. I have 15 in mine, but you can choose as few or as many as you would like.
How To Choose Your Crew…
I have two rules on my variation of the exercise for choosing my passengers. First, they must be people I trust and rely on. Adding family members out of a sense of obligation could sink the boat before it even sets sail. Keep in mind that this is about people who can help you navigate life. It puts a different spin on the term “friends with benefits.”
Second, include only people you know personally. This isn’t a “if you could invite anyone from history” list. Your Lifeboat is not a vessel for wishful thinking.
Check Your Own Compass…
Once your list is complete, it would be a good time to reflect on whether others would include you in their Lifeboat. This exercise is about your beliefs, attitudes, decision-making process, and how you conduct yourself at work and home. Becoming more self-aware helps you recognize opportunities and challenges and make better choices for your goals.
Choose Wisely…
Your Lifeboat is a support system, think tank, and compass for living. Take your time with your list. Be honest with yourself, because the people you choose might shape how your year turns out. Build your list today and hopefully set the course for a more successful year.
