Ric & Dawn Ross

Former music industry Exec. RIC ROSS, and his wife, DAWN ROSS, have partnered with BIG PEACH RUNNING CO. to become the first Black owners of a GEORGIA running store business. Their new venture is soon to open in SOUTH FULTON, part of the GREATER ATLANTA area.

Most recently, he served as CAPITOL RECORDS National Dir. and Regional Promotion Mgr. during his 22-year tenure. His career highlights also include ATLANTIC RECORDS Southeast Dir. and Founder/CEO of the MUSIC EDUCATION GROUP INC., an organization dedicated to empowering youth through music and leadership.

RIC told SWM: “Running has been a significant part of my life for over 40 years. It’s more than just exercise -it’s been a source of mental clarity, community, and personal growth. Opening a specialty running store allows me to share that passion and create a space where runners of all levels feel supported. I wanted to provide not just quality products but also a sense of belonging, education, and motivation for others on their running journeys.”

“Being the first Black-owned specialty running store in GEORGIA -and one of fewer than 10 in the country -is both an honor and a responsibility. Representation matters, and this provides an opportunity to inspire others and show that diversity has a place in every industry. It’s humbling to know that this store is breaking barriers and setting an example, especially in a space that hasn’t traditionally been inclusive.”

“I hope it encourages more minority-owned businesses to enter the running and fitness world. For me, this store is proof that we can redefine the narrative, create opportunities, and pave the way for the next generation of entrepreneurs.”

“Running has taught me valuable life lessons – discipline, perseverance, and the power of community. I wanted to create a place that embodies those principles and inspires people to discover the transformative power of running. This store isn’t just about selling products; it’s about building a hub where people can connect, learn, and grow in their fitness journeys.”

“The transition from 37 years in the record industry to owning a specialty running store was both challenging and rewarding. The music industry taught me valuable lessons about building relationships, understanding audiences, and managing teams – all of which translate well into retail. However, running a store operates on a different rhythm. It’s hands-on, requires a deep connection to the community, and demands constant adaptation to the needs of the customers.”

“The biggest adjustment was shifting from promoting artists to promoting health, wellness, and the joy of running. Instead of talking about chart-topping hits, I’m now talking about shoes, apparel, and the right gear to help someone cross their personal finish line. While the focus has changed, the sense of purpose remains the same: creating impact and fostering connections.

My goal is to make running accessible to everyone, especially those in underserved communities who may not feel included in this space. I want to break down barriers and show that running is for everyone, regardless of their background, experience level, or fitness goals.”

“Additionally, I aim to increase diversity within the running industry – from the customers we serve to the professionals we collaborate with. By fostering a community where everyone feels welcome, I hope to inspire more people to embrace a healthier lifestyle and find joy in running.”

“Ultimately, this store is more than selling shoes and apparel -kit’s about building a legacy. I want to create a ripple effect of inclusivity, health, and positive change, ensuring that the running world becomes a more equitable and inviting space for generations to come.”
