AI Start-ups Face Legal Action For Copyright Infringement
UNIVERSAL MUSIC GROUP, SONY MUSIC ENTERTAINMENT, and WARNER MUSIC GROUP are attempting to stop AI music generators UDIO and SUNO from copying their songs. On AUGUST 1st they went to court in NEW YORK to accuse them of copyright infringement. Their AI models are trained on copyrighted music.
The three music industry companies, with help from the RECORDING INDUSTRY ASSOCIATION OF AMERICA (RIAA), say that SUNO and UDIO copied many of their songs to teach AI robots how to create new music without permission.
UDIO and SUNO admitted they did use the songs to teach their AI robots but thought it was okay to do so. The RIAA said SUNO and UDIO only told the truth after they were taken to court.
